Bulien LLP has been committed to achieving carbon Net Zero since 2021.
Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions. Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.
2020 is our baseline year because it is the year that we had the largest carbon footprint since establishment.
We had a small office in a shared facility, but it was largely unoccupied for much of the year due to COVID-19.
2021 has seen an increase in emissions due entirely to company growth (more employees).
Bulien chose not to renew the lease on the small office, instead committing fully to a work from home culture.
According to the leading GHG Protocol corporate standard, a company’s greenhouse gas emissions are classified into three scopes. Scope 1 and 2 are mandatory to report, whereas scope 3 is voluntary and the hardest to monitor.
As headcount increases, so to do emissions, but Bulien have worked hard to keep carbon emissions low despite the natural challenge of a growing business. Throughout 2021, the company has offset carbon emissions through tree planting schemes in conjunction with The Woodland Trust and TreeApp.
The company intends to continue to offset carbon emissions for each employee by planting a minimum of 50 trees per member of staff. Additionally, these trees are planted where they are globally needed most (as recommended by faculties specialising in this field).
However, Bulien are acutely aware that it is not good enough to simply offset carbon emissions. At the same time, efforts will be made to reduce emissions wherever possible or simply retain the already low levels. Outside of carbon offsetting, the target is to reduce our overall carbon footprint by:
Through these measures, Bulien are carbon negative year-to-date 2021 and will be carbon negative in 2021. It is company policy to remain so thereafter.
As a business we decided not to renew our business office in 2021, opting for a virtual office instead, and with all employees and partners working from home as standard.
In 2020, we planted 5 trees to offset some of our emissions. We have drastically increased our efforts in this regard and in 2021 so far, we have planted 309 trees. This represents over 15 tCO2e of carbon emissions absorbed. We will continue to plant trees as a company and are not happy simply reaching net zero. In 2021, we will be carbon negative and we intend to continue this way even as the business grows.
This Carbon Reduction Plan has been completed in accordance with PPN 06/21 and associated guidance and reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans.
Emissions have been reported and recorded in accordance with the published reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans and the GHG Reporting Protocol corporate standard and uses the appropriate Government emission conversion factors for greenhouse gas company reporting.
Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions have been reported in accordance with SECR requirements, and the required subset of Scope 3 emissions have been reported in accordance with the published reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans and the Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard.
This Carbon Reduction Plan has been reviewed and signed off by the board of directors (or equivalent management body).
